Letter 5: The Long Holiday

Tim,

We're going to have our exams right after the holiday. I guess there will be no fun this weekend. But I will not be studying for the whole holiday, though. Besides, I have some projects I want to make and I do not like to study things I'm not interested in.

Hugo and I were recently watching an animation, and I want to make the costume of the main character. This Friday, we went to Dadaocheng to make videos introducing food there. I went to Yongle Market which was just right next to the vendors selling awesome food. There are tons of different fabric and materials there. I bought the cloth I need and that was a lot of money. I wish I could finish it before Halloween, so I can wear it on the streets then.

By the way, Candy and I asked our drama teacher about the idea of performing a musical for our yearly presentation and he said yes! But we don't know which musical we should choose to perform. We want stories that are not too famous and not so hard for us. Do you have any ideas or have you seen any other musicals performed by students?

  1. Dear Allison,
Good luck with your musical! Go to Google and type in "most popular high school musicals" for a list of ideas. These, of course, are going to be American or British musicals. Most US high schools will do a drama in the fall, a Christmas show, and a musical in the spring. The musicals usually take a LOT more practice time.
Some things to consider: How big is the cast supposed to be? How many boys roles, how many girls? Are there some roles that could be either boys or girls? How elaborate is the costuming? Could you do it without, or with very "simplified" costuming or sets?
Would it be possible to not do the full musical at all, but do famous scenes from one or more different musicals? A "Disney Review" for example.
Are there any Japanese musicals that have been done in English?
If you are looking for a one-act performance, you might consider "The Cup Song", or "You're going to Miss me when I'm gone". Santa Rosa's in Macau did it last year if you'd like to see a recording. There are also a lot of samples on You Tube". It's very entertaining, and you can do it with as few as about 10 up to the entire school. Type in "Irish Cup Song" for my favorite version, but you would need to go somewhere else to find the English lyrics. They're singing in Gaelic.

Please keep me up to date on how this is going!

    Tim
